Really, don't try mixing physics and Eve, they don't sing from the same hymn sheet. Let me tell you the tale of too little noobs discussing 'Eve-Phys'...
noob1: "So what is 'explosive' damage?" noob2: "well it's in vacuum so it probably refers to the momentum of the photons kicked out from the 'bang', but perhaps also referring to the transfer of momentum through the armour/hull from physical impacts" noob1: "Ah I see, so it's all about the momentum!"
noob1: "Oh but hang on, what about 'thermal damage'?" noob2: "well you see, that's referring to heat transferred to the armour/hull from photons hitting it/ kinetic energy penetrators impacting it" noob1: "Great, but what about shields? and how does the heat transfer across vacuum?" noob2: "..er, umm, photons in the IR range of the spectrum" noob1: "oh... photons again?"
noob1: "But what about 'EM damage'?" noob2: "uh huh, well this causes damage to shields armour and hull, yeah... and clearly given it comes from lasers, it's referring to photons depositing energy onto the surface!" noob1: "wait a second I thought you said heating from photon bombardment came under 'thermal damage?'..." noob2: "yeah umm...you see that's different photons" noob1: "Aaah I see...but what about the momentum of the photons, doesn't that refer to 'explosive damage'?" noob2: "no no, that's the other photons..." noob1: "So where's kinetic damage fit into this?" noob2: "Yeah, now you see, this is caused by the kinetic energy of *insert whatever* hitting the ship transferring kinetic energy to the armour/hull" noob1: "but doesn't that cause heating? and so shouldn't that come under 'thermal damage'?" noob2: "...." noob1: "err, didn't you also say that it was explosive damage which referred to momentum, and isn't that just the first derivative of kinetic energy?..."
noob2: ".....STFU.."

Originally by: Sessho Seki CCP made an excuse of having to move the entire thing which is preposterous, but it makes for interesting game-play, so really thatĘs not at issue, however, trying to explain it with a reasonable and logical explanation is simply not going to happen.
Have you ever seen THEL in action? ----------
